Bangladesh will face stiff competition in apparel exports to the European Union (EU) as its competitor Vietnam recently signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with the EU, according to Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Rubana Huq, who said almost 11 per cent of Vietnamese apparel exports to EU will get complete duty waiver.

Scientists at the Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University, have developed an efficient, low-cost method to convert waste denim into viscose-type fibres that are either white or the original colour of the garment. With rising clothing waste, the study is significant since the current processes for textile recycling are inefficient and expensive. 

The research, published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, was funded by the Australian Research Council Research Hub for Future Fibres.
