Stressing on the need to upgrade textiles machines, especially in the jute sector, Indian textiles minister Smriti Irani recently proposed to organise a Grand Machinery Challenge for the sector to throw up new technologies. She was speaking at the virtual awards ceremony function of the the Textile Grand Challenge 2019 organized by the ministry.

The ministry organized the competition with support from the National Jute Board and the Start-up India Team of the department for promotion of industry & industrial trade (DPIIT).

The autumn edition of Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles is all set to begin on August 24, becoming the first physical trade event for home textiles held by Messe Frankfurt since January. Considering the unusual circumstances, the fair is launching an online business matching platform to enable participants, who cannot travel, connect with partners.

Thailand-based VT Garment has launched its personal protective equipment (PPE) brand Silguard. VT's product development team took only 3 months to receive CE PPE Category 3 certifications for its coveralls and isolation gowns. Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has recognised VT's accomplishment as a product that is wholly sourced in the kingdom.

The medical textile laboratory of the Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre (FFDC) in Kanpur recently claimed to have developed a fabric with fragrance and can survive after multiple washes. FFDC assistant director Shakti Vijay Shukla said trials are under way to see how many washes the fragrances like rose, khus, chameli and sandalwood can survive.

The aromatic clothes will be more comfortable than those designed using normal fabric, the scientists told a news agency.

As micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) face several challenges in technology adoption that includes lack of information technology infrastructure, skilled resources and data security concerns, start-up ESG Robo has created a model that eliminates all upfront investment requirements by factories, according to founder-chief executive officer Sandeep Raghuwanshi.

For the apparel industry in particular, the companies have additional concerns of uncertain order pipeline and thin profit margins, he told Fibre2Fashion in an interview.

Total UK online fashion checkouts rose by 93 per cent year on year (YoY) in June, according to True Fit, a personalisation platform for apparel and footwear retailers. However, average order value (AOV) fell by 22 per cent in June over 2019 figures. Total sales, while down YOY since March, rose in June and are now on par with total sales figures from 2019.

Five garment manufacturing units and three private firms were recently allotted land along the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh (UP). The decision is expected to fetch investments worth ₹50 crore and create 2,000 jobs, officials said. The allotted pieces of land are close to the upcoming international Greenfield airport in Jewar.
