ROURKELA: After a slow start, the fashion garment sales has picked up pace in the last few days. A release of ex gratia to public sector steel workers for Durga Puja is adding to the festive shopping spree. Around `10,000 each was released to nearly 12,500 senior employees while `8,000 each was released to around 1,500 new joinees of RSP on Friday. Similarly, a sizeable number of South Eastern Railways Group B and C workers received `17,951 each.

A host of new swanky garment outlets have cropped up at Rourkela Smart City for the festival. Retail market sources informed that over the past three to six days there have been rush of buyers to the garment outlets. While apparels and accessories from mid and economy segment shops are selling like hot cakes, the premium brands have little takers.

The city with a population of about 5.5 lakh comprising the Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) limits and Rourkela Industrial Township (RIT) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has about 52 big and exclusive garments and cloth showrooms along with numerous medium and small size outlets. Conservatively, the city’s festive market share of retail fashion garments is estimated around `20 to `25 crore.

Director of Bothra Mega Bazaar Pvt Ltd Bikram Bothra said, “There is a sudden spurt in demand for mens, ladies and kids wear.” Bothra claimed buyers at Rourkela city always look for good commodities at an affordable price range.
