Call for policy support to boost garment accessories sector

Garment accessories manufacturers sought policy support from the government to promote the sector by creating more employments and removing poverty. Bangladesh Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) President Abdul Kader Khan addressed a press conference in Dhaka yesterday.


The conference was organised to announce Garmentech Bangladesh 2017 and Gapexo 2017 and Yarn and Fabric Sourcing Fair 2017 to be held in the International Convention City Bashundhara from January 18.


BGAPMEA, ASK Trade and Exhibition Private Limited, India, and Zakaria Trade and Fair International are jointly organising the expo that will continue until January 21. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the four-day expo while Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq will also be present as special guest.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) leadets will also attend the opening ceremony.


“Business expansion and increased production capacity can contribute more to the development of the country’s economy,” said Abdul Kader Khan. He suggested creating more employment to remove poverty, and so, expansion of export-oriented industries is a must. But to expand garment accessories industry, a backward linkage of RMG sector, the sector people need policy support including cash incentives, interest rate cut,  infrastructural development and support for capacity building.


Bangladesh RMG sector has set the export target of $50 billion by 2021, and to attain the target, contribution to accessories has to hiked to $18 billion. In the last fiscal year, deemed export earnings of garment accessories and packaging stood at $6.12 billion, which is 9.28% higher compared to $5.6 billion a year ago.


Tipu Sultan Bhuyian, CEO, Zakaria Trade and Fair International, said: “GARMENTECH Bangladesh has been the technology destination of the RMG sector to modernise and upgrade the value chain, alongside moving it up. Some 400 exhibitors from Bangladesh, China, India, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Italy, Singapore, Japan, Germany, USA, UK, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Thailand, France, and Colombia will showcase their technology solutions related to productivity, safety, compliance, efficiency, value addition, product diversification, fabric sourcing and packaging solutions for the RMG sector.


GARMENTECH will showcase its latest products in sewing, knitting, embroidery, laundry, finishing, dyeing, cad/cam, printing, cutting, spreading machinery from leading companies from across the world.


Technology solutions at the fair will address the pressing concerns of the industry, safety, compliance, productivity, efficiency and value-addition. Yarn and Fabrics sourcing fair will have its latest collections of natural and synthetic yarn and fabric and its blend both for woven and knit sectors to be showcased by overseas companies.


GAPEXPO 2017 will display its latest collection of garment accessories and packaging. Leading companies from Bangladesh and overseas will showcase garment accessories, packaging and related machinery including labels, zippers, tags, tapes, thread, ribbon, buttons, rivets, laces, hooks, transfer film, paper, ink, etc, at the mega show.
