Nearly 419 readymade garment factories in Bangladesh have remained closed for the last two months as global buyers stopped placing work orders due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Production in 348 member factories of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and 71 factories of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) remained suspended since March last week.

Of the 419 factories, nearly a hundred units opted for permanent closure and the rest are waiting for work orders to resume production, leaders of BGMEA and BKMEA said.

According to BGMEA officials, of the 348 member factories, 268 were closed temporarily due to lack of work orders, and the rest were closed permanently.

Of the 348, 91 are located in Gazipur, 79 at Ashulia in Dhaka, 70 in Narayanganj, 67 in Chattogram and 40 units are located in the Dhaka city, according to Bangla media reports.

The factory owners started reopening the factories from April 26 with permission from the government.

According to BGMEA, 1,150 member factories reported cancellation of orders worth $3.18 billion by global buyers due to the pandemic.
